COACHES
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
~ Proverbs 3:5-6
Robert Marshall
Head Varsity Coach
The mission and direction of Calvary Chapel Baseball is to strive to honor God through the game of baseball by developing athletes of integrity, discipline, and servant leadership. We want to forge relentless competitors as we train with purpose, play with urgency, and honor Christ in every rep, every inning of every moment. We pursue excellence with discipline, unity, and an unbreakable commitment to glorify God through our preparation, our character, and our performance. We don’t just aim to win games—we aim to build warriors of faith who compete without fear and lead with conviction. Every training session and every contest is approached with the conviction that sports are a platform for worship, growth, and service.
I am committed to teaching fundamental baseball at the highest level and letting each player’s God given ability grow in the game of baseball. The Calvary Chapel Baseball program is passionate about teaching fundamentals that give your player the best opportunity for athletic excellence. I have learned that true success extends far beyond performance—it flows from a disciplined walk with God. We know we are not perfect, but we strive to be. Our program adheres to mercy, grace, forgiveness, and love.
Competition should be encouraged! As the head coach of the Calvary baseball program, I highly encouraged our athletes to compete fiercely. Competing reflects the character of Jesus and his teachings. Paul said in 1st Corinthians 9:24, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize”. My baseball program will train not only to be competitive in baseball but also in everything God puts in front of our athletes, so they have the best opportunity for success in their personal lives.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your path.
~ Proverbs 3:5-6

This verse reminds me that God has a purpose and plan for each athlete, on the field and in life.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
~ Jeremiah 29:11

He attended Carson High School, while being active in athletics. He earned his BA in Business Administration from CSU, Long Beach. He enjoys coaching because it allows him to invest in the next generation, both in their athletic development and in their character. He has served as a Youth Director/ Pastor at his church for over 12 years, which has givin him a deep passion for mentoring young people and walking alongside them in their spiritual growth. He strives to help players excel in baseball fundamentals while also encouraging them in their faith journey, regardless of their background. He has over 20 years of coaching experience across Little League, PONY, and competitive travel baseball up to the high school level. Ian Whitten
Assistant Varsity Coach
Coach Whitten grew up as a multi-sport athlete in the Anaheim and Pomona areas and later committed fully to baseball under the mentorship of the late Coach Cross. Under his guidance, he discovered his love to not just lead but also coach. Now with over 20 years of coaching experience, he is grateful to have found a home at Calvary with the confidence knowing that God has led him here for His purpose and calling. He values the relationships built over the years at Marina and Edison High School but is excited for this new Chapter. A humble man of God, Coach Whitten builds trust and respect while helping athletes grow physically, mentally, and spiritually.
He is the founder of Anchored Baseball, created as a safe haven to mentor young men through biblical values, accountability, and strong male leadership. Anchored Baseball implements the C.L.A.S.S. mentality while teaching that identity is found in Christ, not performance. This is a mission he continues through his partnership with Identity Sports and his own family ministry.
Coach Whitten is happily married and the proud father of three children, which he considers his greatest blessing and first ministry. He and his family enjoy spending time outdoors and serving together, living out their faith daily. He leads with humility, consistency, and love, pointing young men toward Christ and preparing them for life on and off the field.
“Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.”
~ 1 Peter 5:2-3
